Ultrasonography Services
Effective treatment of disease, trauma and pain requires greater visibility inside our patients. Engage AVI to enhance your diagnostic capabilities and improve your patient outcomes.
We provide advanced imaging referral services to the western and upstate NY veterinary community to ensure better diagnosis and improved patient outcomes. AVI provides veterinarians with outpatient access to CT Scanning and Ultrasonic imaging from our facilities in Rochester, NY.
Veterinary Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a non-invasive Doppler imaging technology that is ideal for analyzing soft tissue such as reproductive health, abdominal conditions or cardiac circulatory and musculaskeletal conditions.
It is generally more cost effective than CT scan as there is typically no anesthesia required for imaging. Ultrasound gives us greater directional flexibility than X-ray imaging allowing us to explore and probe areas of interest more critically, where conventional X-ray may be inconclusive. It is also a live imaging process that allows us to see areas of interest in functional movement which can be very useful for cardiac, digestive and reproductive analysis.
Common conditions addressed through Ultrasound include:
Abdominal evaluation: Neoplasia, ascites, chronic and acute liver diseases, pancreatitis, renal infections or uroliths, Inflamatory Bowel Syndromes (IBD) or neoplasias, lymph node evaluation, splenic tumor definition and monitoring
Gallbladder disease: Gallstones and inflammation (e.g. cholecystitis)
Urinary tract issues: Kidney stones and bladder stones, obstructions, dilations
Soft tissue organs: Evaluating liver, spleen, pancreas, and thyroid nodules
Echocardiograms: Heart structure, valve function, and pumping performance (telemedicine evaluation from Cardiologist)
Vascular disease: Monitoring blood flow, locating blood clots or aneurysms, thromboembolic disease
Joint and tendon injuries: Diagnosing tendonitis and tendon tears vs neoplasia or cysts.
Tissue Sampling: Needle guidance for abdominocentesis and fine-needle aspiration of lymph nodes
Reproductive evaluation: Testicular disease, pyometra, pregnancy monitoring
How to engage AVI for Ultrasounds
STEP ONE – Like CT scans, AVI requires a referral form from the pet’s primary veterinarian to perform all Ultrasounds. Once AVI receives a referral form, we will review the medical records, bloodwork, and referral information prior to scheduling an imaging appointment.
CLICK HERE to download the AVI referral form, fill it out and return it to avi.ctscans@gmail.com.
In most cases, there is no need to sedate the patient for ultrasonography. However we do request patients to arrive fasted (no meals for 8 hours) in case sedation is necessary. AVI will contact the referring veterinarian if additional information is required, such as prior imaging results, regular medications or chronic conditions, ensuring a safe and successful imaging procedure. NOTE: If your patient requires Gabapentin or trazodone for a comfortable and less anxious day at the veterinary office, then please dispense the common dose for his/her comfort while at AVI for Imaging procedures.
STEP TWO - AVI will then contact the pet parent for scheduling the imaging appointment at a mutually agreeable time. AVI performs routine CT scans on Wednesday mornings with provisions for emergency imaging in urgent cases.
Patient drop-off is between 8:00 and 8:30 AM at our facility at 3505 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY 14624. Owners are not expected to remain on site during the imaging procedure.
Patient pick-ups must occur between 12:00 – 2:00 PM on the same day of imaging procedures. We have no provision for overnight housing and care.
Results are e-mailed to the referring veterinarian with a link to all images typically within 4 days.
